The Connection Between Mental and Physical Pain

My trauma occurred in February of 2011. As I stood in front of the podium and spoke at a state summit in Michigan, I recounted my trauma — my past — in front of a room filled with strangers. I shared my vulnerable story and my transition from victim to thriving survivor. As I spoke, my legs shook uncontrollably, my palms were sweaty, and my heart raced.

How the Hell do I Stay Sober Now?!



It is easier than ever to become lost in the rabbit holes our minds are diving into — fear of the future, fear of the unknown… If not already happening, many of us will likely also experience the reality of being host to a virus which may or may not make us, our loved ones, or our colleagues ill.

My gratitude extends to all who are taking seriously the social distancing actions and other important measures to keep people safe. It is truly choosing to live in the reality of the current situation. (more…)

Man Stops Using Fentanyl During 2020 Pandemic To Save His 80 Year Old Mother



Heroes come in many forms.

Earlier this week a young man traveled from Kentucky to the Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine in Richmond, Virginia for an accelerated detox off heroin and fentanyl. (His urine drug screen revealed there was actually no heroin; it was all fentanyl).

Admittedly grateful for a severe needle phobia, James was snorting about .2 to .3 grams daily, and had been using regularly for about three years. Prior to that, he’d enjoyed six years of abstinence from all mind-altering substances.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month



Alcohol Awareness Month was established in 1987 to help reduce the stigma associated with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) by encouraging communities to reach out to the American public each April with information about alcohol, alcohol addiction, and recovery. Alcohol addiction is a chronic, progressive disease, and can be fatal if untreated. Treatment and recovery from AUD is available and possible! (more…)
